MEL-DEK

DECK WATERPROOFING SYSTEM
Provides a cost effective waterproofing underlayment for asphaltic overlays.

SEALTIGHT MEL-DEK is a flexible, dependable roll-type waterproofing membrane designed for bridges, parking decks or other vehicular structures to be overlaid with an asphaltic wearing course.

Technical Description
SEALTIGHT MEL-DEK is a roll-type waterproofing membrane composed of a nominally 53 mil thick layer of polymeric waterproofing membrane on a shrink-resistant, heavy-duty 12 mil thick, polypropylene woven carrier fabric. The 2 components are laminated together under strictly controlled production procedures.

Uses
SEALTIGHT MEL-DEK Waterproofing System provides an excellent waterproofing membrane for bridges, parking decks or other vehicular traffic structures to be overlaid with an asphaltic concrete wearing course. Ideal for repair, maintenance or new construction applications.

Advantages and Benefits

bulletRequires no protection...can withstand the dynamic placement of hot asphaltic overlays
bulletProvides 3/4" membrane-to-membrane weld at seams for positive, monolithic protection
bulletFlexible, dependable, cost-effective and easy to install
bulletMeets a wide range of maintenance and new construction application needs

Application
NOTE: For applications receiving overlays other than asphalt, please consult with W.R. MEADOWS TECHNICAL SERVICE.

SURFACE PREPARATION: New concrete surfaces are to be fully cured and dry or approved by the engineer. Surface is to be cleaned of all dust, dirt and debris just prior to priming. Existing concrete surfaces are to have a smooth, sound, monolithic surface, free of voids, spalled areas, sharp protrusions and loose aggregate. Remove all traces of old membranes, oil, grease or other contaminants.

TEMPERATURE: SEALTIGHT MEL-DEK may be applied in fair weather at air and concrete surface temperatures of 40ºF (4ºC) and higher.

JOINTS AND SLAB DRAINAGE: Apply a reinforcing strip of SEALTIGHT DETAIL STRIP over all non-working joints or cracks over 3/16" (4.76mm) wide before applying finished membrane.

Seal all terminations with SEALTIGHT POINTING MASTIC. Deck surface must provide proper pitch to gutters and drains. Drainage openings should be provided at the structural deck level to drain any water that penetrates the asphaltic concrete surface.

PRIMING: Prime all surfaces to be covered with SEALTIGHT MEL-PRIME Water-Base or MEL-PRIME Solvent-Base VOC Primer. Primer may be spray-applied or applied with a lamb's wool roller. Allow primer to dry until tack-free. Primed areas not covered in 24 hours must be reprimed. Coverage, 250 to 300 ft.²/gal. (6.14 to 7.36m²/L).

APPLICATION METHOD: Apply MEL-DEK from low point to high point, in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. In the transverse direction, overlap in shingle fashion 2-1/2" (63.5mm) after removing the white polyethylene strip that exposes the 3/4" rubberized asphalt. This will give you the membrane to membrane weld at seams. Longitudinally, overlap 6" (150mm) and seal with Pointing Mastic. Once positioned, the MEL-DEK should be immediately hand rubbed onto the surface followed by a pressure-applied roll-pressing of the complete surface to assure positive adhesion. Seal all terminations with SEALTIGHT POINTING MASTIC.

NOTE: If a thickness greater than 125 mils is desired, overlap each roll of MEL-DEK 51%.

INSPECT AND REPAIR: Inspect thoroughly before covering and make any necessary repairs immediately. Patch all tears. Slit fishmouths and patch. Seal edges of all patches with SEALTIGHT POINTING MASTIC.

PAVING: Placement of the asphaltic concrete overlay should be accomplished as soon as possible after application of the MEL-DEK. A minimum 2" (50mm) compacted overlay thickness is required. The temperature of the asphaltic concrete at the time of compaction should be a minimum of 290ºF, and not exceed 340ºF. Protect the membrane surface from unnecessary traffic. Place the overlay from low point to high point with care and caution.
