MELNAR®
SELF-ADHERING, SHEET VAPORPROOFING -
WATERPROOFING
Provides a waterproofing membrane, an
impermeable vapor seal and a protection course all in one application.
SEALTIGHT MELNAR Polymeric Surface Waterproofing Membrane is an economical,
self-adhering sheet-type waterproofing membrane with an impermeable vapor seal.
OSHA-approved excavation wall shoring has been removed for the unobstructed
purposes of photographic illustration of product application. NOTE: Please
follow all OSHA regulations for proper personnel protection involving
excavations.
Technical Description
SEALTIGHT MELNAR Polymeric Surface Waterproofing Membrane is
composed of a unique selection of materials, combined under strict quality
controlled conditions and manufactured into a membrane panel that provides the
functions of 3 products: A waterproofing membrane, an impermeable vapor-seal and
a protection course all in 1 application.
MELNAR is a rugged, seven-ply membrane consisting of the PLASMATIC Matrix
encased in fortified bitumen and topped by a weather-coated, inert reinforcing
ply. Below the PLASMATIC core is a reinforcing carrier sheet to which is bonded
the dual purpose polymeric surface a highly flexible polymeric material applied
at a controlled 62.5 mils (1/16") thickness.
MELNAR's dual-purpose polymeric surface is both a waterproofing membrane and an
adhesive when the panels are properly applied by trained applicators using
correct waterproofing techniques and procedures.
MELNAR, while rigid enough to permit easy handling, is flexible enough to
conform to substrates that are reasonably smooth. It is ruggedly built to resist
punctures and tears during normal construction and backfilling operations. It
eliminates the need for a separate protective cover when placing concrete and/or
backfilling.
MELNAR offers a WVT rating of 0.00 gr./sq. ft./hr., the lowest in the industry
Uses
SEALTIGHT MELNAR Polymeric Surface Waterproofing Membrane is used
for water and vaporproofing exterior vertical surfaces and interior and exterior
horizontal surfaces, above and below grade, where protection against moisture
migration and/or water movement is required. Typical applications include
foundation walls, between slab waterproofing, plaza and parking deck
waterproofing and similar installations.

differing application techniques on the job
| Speeds installation. Just prime the surface, peel-off
the anti-stick sheet, position the membrane panels and roll-press the panels
in place
| Keeps tools required to a minimum. Panels cut and trim
easily with a roofer's knife. No special tools required. Nothing to mix,
heat or prepare
| Apply MELNAR and backfill immediately – no lengthy
drying period..saves time and money
| Compares competitively with hot or cold liquid
membranes with protection course applications. MELNAR is substantially
faster and more economical to install with a minimum of waste |

Vertical Application
MELNAR is ideal for use wherever water
and/or moisture is to be kept from penetrating vertical concrete walls, above or
below grade. The combination of easy-to-handle 4' by 8' panels and its adhesive
feature makes MELNAR particularly well suited for vertical surface usage.
Provides a monolithic, water and vapor-proof barrier capable of withstanding a
75 ft. head of water. The built-in protection course guards against damage
during construction and backfilling.
Once MELNAR is installed, SEALTIGHT Detail Strips are applied to the inside and
outside corners and over each panel's butt-joint, backfill immediately. Where
the foundation wall is to receive several courses of MELNAR, backfilling can be
done as the installation progresses, thus eliminating the need for scaffolding.
Masonry walls must be parge coated with an asphaltic foundation coating or a
cementitious material before applying MELNAR. NOTE: MELNAR sheets may be applied
in a vertical or horizontal pattern. Patterns can be intermingled.
Horizontal Application
MELNAR is tailor-made for use in between slab construction. The
panels are butted tightly together and, when the joints are properly sealed with
SEALTIGHT Detail Strips, the result is a monolithic barrier that provides
continuous contact with the surface to preclude lateral movement of water under
the membrane. Panels and strips must be rolled-with-pressure to assure maximum
adhesion. Because of its rugged, built-in protection course, MELNAR can
withstand normal construction traffic and the placing of concrete. It remains
flexible and is unaffected by repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
On concrete slabs, with an asphalt overlay, the direct applied, compacted hot
asphalt will not penetrate the protection of MELNAR. This makes MELNAR ideal for
use in areas subject to traffic vibrations. Other typical applications include
between-slab waterproofing in building floors, on plaza and parking decks, under
shower pans and flood floors, and above and below computer and mechanical rooms.
Application
STORAGE AND HANDLING: Store membrane cartons on pallets and cover
if left outside. Keep materials away from sparks and flames. Store where
temperature will not exceed 90ºF (32ºC) for extended periods of time.
SURFACE PREPARATION: Concrete surfaces must be clean, free of standing water and
be reasonably smooth, so the panels will not "bridge" but lay flat to
the surface. Patch all holes and voids and smooth-out any surface mis-alignments.
PRIME: Vertical and horizontal surfaces must be primed with SEALTIGHT MEL-PRIME
Primer prior to application of the MELNAR. Spray on the primer with
commercial-type sprayer. A lambs wool roller can also be used. Prior to
application, prime all vertical and/or horizontal surfaces to be covered in 1
working day with applicable MEL-PRIME Primer. Uncovered, primed surfaces must be
reprimed the next day. Follow all instructions and precautions shown on primer
containers.
TEMPERATURE: Apply in dry, fair weather when the air and surface substrate
temperatures are 40ºF (4ºC) and above.
FOOTING DETAILS: Use SEALTIGHT Detail Strips for impaction coverage. First, fold
strips lengthwise and then cut at the fold. Material is then ready to install as
4-1/2" (11.43cm) strips on either side of the rebar. Any excess can be
turned down the face of the footing. Next, fill the keyway with SEALTIGHT
Catalytic Bonding Asphalt. Pour the walls. Install a SEALTIGHT Detail Strip
horizontally along the wall where it meets the footing placing half the material
up the wall and the other half onto the footing. Extend the material 4-1/2"
(11.43cm) beyond outside corners. Slit extended portion of detail strip
lengthwise. Place the horizontal flap out onto the footing and bend the vertical
flap around the wall (See Diagram A). Repeat this procedure in the opposite
direction, shown in Diagram B.
VERTICAL WALLS: Apply MELNAR Membrane vertically in
lengths approximately 8' (2.44m) long over the top of the horizontal Detail
Strips, and terminate at the footing. Butt MELNAR sheets tightly together. Apply
Detail Strips over each butted joint. Tightly butt edges of MELNAR membrane and
apply SEALTIGHT Pointing Mastic in the corner (See Diagram C). To the top
terminations, apply SEALTIGHT Pointing Mastic at least 1/8" (3.18mm) thick
and 1" (25.4mm) wide. Masonry walls must be parge-coated with TROWEL MASTIC
before applying MELNAR.
HAND-RUB AND ROLL-PRESS: Once positioned, immediately hand-rub MELNAR Membrane
firmly to the surface and then pressure roll the complete surface to assure
positive adhesion.
INSIDE CORNERS: Before MELNAR is applied, place a vertical SEALTIGHT Detail
Strip on inside corners extending the material 4-1/2" (11.43cm) beyond each
side of the corner (See Diagram D). Terminate at the footing and finish the
corner with SEALTIGHT Pointing Mastic.
OUTSIDE CORNERS: After the membrane is applied, bend a SEALTIGHT Detail Strip
vertically over the outside corner and extend 4-1/2" (11.43cm) beyond each
side of the corner. Terminate the material at the footing. Finish the corner
with Pointing Mastic (See Diagram C).
DRAINS AND PROTRUSIONS: All protrusions should be sealed with 2 layers of MELNAR
Membrane applied at least 6" (152.4mm) in all directions. Seal all
terminations with SEALTIGHT Pointing Mastic. Around drains apply 2 layers of
MELNAR Membrane and put a bead of Pointing Mastic between the membrane and
clamping rings and at all terminations, drains and protrusions.
HORIZONTAL INSTALLATIONS: Apply MELNAR Membrane horizontally butting the sheets
tightly together. SEALTIGHT Detail Strips should be used to cover each
butted-joint. MELNAR and Detail Strips should be roll-pressed after application.
INSPECT AND REPAIR: Inspect and repair immediately before covering. Tears and
inadequate overlays should be covered with MELNAR Membrane and the patch edges
sealed with Pointing Mastic.
PROTECT THE MEMBRANE: Backfilling should be done immediately using care and
caution.

Precautions
MELNAR should be applied at substrate
temperatures of 40ºF (4ºC) or above by trained applicators using correct
waterproofing techniques and procedures. Indoor storage is suggested. Store on a
flat surface, not more than 1 pallet high.
Backfilling should begin as soon as the application of MELNAR is completed and
must be done within 48 hours after the material is applied to the wall. Care
should be taken not to disrupt the bond of the membrane to the walls. Be sure
the backfill material is not dropped against the membrane in such a manner that
it could drag the sheet down or dislodge the overlay strips.
Masonry walls must be parge-coated with an asphaltic foundation coating or a
cementitious material before applying MELNAR. Prime the dried parge coat prior
to applying MELNAR. The use of MELNAR does not negate the need for relief of
hydrostatic heads. A complete drain tile system should be placed around the
exterior of footings and under slabs, as required. Avoid the use of products
which contain tars, solvents, pitches, polysulfide polymers or PVC materials
that may come into direct contact with MELNAR. Read and follow application
information, precautions and Material Safety Data information.
