NO. 711
SEALTIGHT PREMOULDED MEMBRANE®
VAPOR SEAL
Technical Description
SEALTIGHT PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL
provides a positive, easy-to-install and economical vaporproofing system. When
properly applied, it will stop moisture migration through foundation walls and
footings...concrete floor slabs and structural slabs. PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR
SEAL also provides a "built-in" protection course to resist job-site
puncturing and the abrasive action of backfilling.
PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL is a permanently bonded multi-ply core board of
pure blown, mineral fortified, highmelt asphalt between layers of saturated felt
and glass mat. The glass mat liner is weather coated and has an anti-stick
facing sheet of polyethylene film. Supplied in 4' (1.22m) by 8' (2.44m) panels.
Material weighs approximately 65 lbs. per 100 ft.˛ (3.17 kg./m˛).
PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL has a constant water vapor transmission rate not
greater than 0.00 grains per square foot per hour, as measured in accordance
with ASTM Test Method E-96, both before and after alternate cycles of wetting
and drying.
Uses
Trained workmen, experienced in good waterproofing practices, will
quickly and easily install PREMOULDED MEMBRANE on below-grade exterior walls and
on-grade under concrete floor slabs to provide areas that can be fully utilized
without moisture problems. Proper application also prevents moisture filtration
through intermediate structural floor slabs – either downward, such as from a
kitchen, or upward from a shower room or garage area. Protects equipment rooms
from moisture damage. To relieve hydrostatic pressure, a complete drain tile
system should also be used in accordance with good construction practices.
Advantages and Benefits
| Stops adhesive deterioration
| Eliminates bumps, ridges, or bubbles
| Prevents color changes
| Does not promote mold, mildew or bacteria growth
| Provides a barrier, sealing out efflorescence (alkali
build-up at tile joints)
| Helps eliminate tile peaking or curling
| Material is strong, rugged and easy to handle
| Has flexural strength and resistance to withstand
impacts and abrasions
| Impermeable – WVT rating of 0.00 grains/hour/square
feet
| Stops moisture migration – its positive joint-sealing
method helps form a monolithic VAPOR SEAL
| Pays for itself over the years through reduced
maintenance |

Accessories
BONDING AGENTS: SEALTIGHT Catalytic
Bonding Asphalt: A non-setting bitumen that provides a seal that will expand and
contract without breaking bond. Use to seal horizontal joints and rebars between
impaction sheets or footing. Packaging: 5 gallon (18.93 liter) pails.
SEALTIGHT PM-5X: A quick-setting bitumen offering strong initial tack, used to
adhere PREMOULDED MEMBRANE to vertical surfaces.
Packaging: 5 gallon (18.93 liter) pails.
SEALTIGHT Detail Strip: A sturdy, self-adhering, reinforced tape of polymeric
membrane that requires no additional adhesive. Provides a simple, easy and
economical method of effectively sealing horizontal and vertical butt-joints.
Strip is nominally 9" (.23 m) wide and 50' (15.24 m) long. Has quick-strip
release paper for ease of handling and application. Packaged 4 rolls per carton.
SEALTIGHT Pointing Mastic is used for sealing "butt-joints" and top
horizontal terminations.

Storage
Handling of PREMOULDED MEMBRANE is not
critical because of its strength; however, it is advisable to stack the membrane
on smooth ground or a wood platform at the excavation site. This will eliminate
the possibility of the PREMOULDED MEMBRANE sheets warping or deforming.
Specifier and user shall determine suitability of product for specific
applications and assume all responsibilities in connection therewith.
Application
HORIZONTAL APPLICATION: PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL can be
applied directly over tamped grade, because it does not require a gravel bed, a
bed of sand and/or "crusher run" prior to the installation of the
floor slab, although these practices are acceptable. The polyfilm side of the
board is placed down to the grade with the felt side up to the concrete.
Material is placed in position in either the "Dutch Lap" method with
laps sealed with SEALTIGHT Catalytic Bonding Asphalt or by the
"Butt-Joint" method with joints sealed with SEALTIGHT Detail Strips.
These methods provide a permanent, monolithic VAPOR SEAL without voids or open
seams. If desired, on structural floor slabs of multi-level building, sheets may
be placed in a bed of hot asphalt for continuous adhesion.
"DUTCH LAP" METHOD: The "Dutch Lap" method of applying
PREMOULDED MEMBRANE on below or above-grade horizontal floor slabs. After
removing the polyfilm at the overlap, seal all laps with SEALTIGHT Catalytic
Bonding Asphalt. Roll with pressure or "walk-in" all slabs to assure
complete adhesion.
"BUTT-JOINT" METHOD: The "Butt-Joint" method of applying
PREMOULDED MEMBRANE: The sheets are tightly butted together and sealed with
SEALTIGHT Detail Strips. The Detail Strip is centered on the joint of the felt
side and rolled down with pressure for a positive seal.
ESTIMATING: When estimating the amount of PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL
required, figure the actual area plus 20% for overlap when using sheets. For
rolls, figure actual areas plus 12% for overlap.
Handling Suggestions
CUTTING: PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL can be cut with a roofer’s
or linoleum knife using a straight edge.
BENDING: To facilitate bending at a change in plane such as at corners or
footings, lightly heat the board at the bending area.
STORAGE: Handling of PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL is not critical because of
its strength; however, it is advisable to stack the material on smooth ground or
a wood platform at the excavation site. This will eliminate the possibility of
the PREMOULDED MEMBRANE sheets deforming or warping.
POINTING: Pointing with SEALTIGHT Pointing Mastic should be done wherever an
edge is exposed to prevent water from traveling under a sheet.
SEALING PROCEDURES: All protrusions which go through the concrete slab such as
sewer pipes, water pipes and utility inlets, must have a positive seal between
the protrusion and the PREMOULDED MEMBRANE.
Place a collar of PREMOULDED MEMBRANE at least 12" larger than the
protrusion around the protrusion. Seal in place with SEALTIGHT Pointing Mastic
and point around the protrusion.
Packaging
PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL is packaged in sheets 48" (1.22
m) wide x 8' (2.44m) long.
Precautions
PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL does not negate the need for relief
of hydrostatic heads. A complete drain tile system should be placed on the
exterior of the footing and, in severe cases, on the interior of the footing.
The current use of increased amounts of various fillers, extenders or additives
in the concrete mix can result in the concrete having a higher than normal
porosity. Adhesive coverage ratios must be adjusted to compensate for resulting
penetration and additional coats may be required to provide proper surface
treatment. The concrete mix design for the floor slab should provide for the
lowest possible slump and yet assure complete hydration of the concrete.
BACKFILLING: While PREMOULDED MEMBRANE VAPOR SEAL is strong enough so that a
protection course is not required, when backfilling, care should be taken not to
disrupt the bond of the membrane to the walls. Be sure that the backfill
material is not dropped against the membrane in such a manner that it could drag
the sheet as it drops or dislodge the Detail Strips.
